Hammer and Shooting Star
Technical AnalysisSingle-candle reversal signals with one long wick — a hammer after a decline, a shooting star after an advance.
The hammer and the shooting star are single-candle reversal signals built from a small body and one long wick. A hammer appears after a decline: the long lower wick shows that sellers pushed price down but buyers took it back before the close, leaving the body near the high of the candle. A shooting star is the mirror image after an advance, with a long upper wick and the body near the low, showing that buying was rejected. Both belong to the same family as the pin bar and are read as evidence that one side lost control at an extreme. They carry far more weight at a tested support or resistance level, with a following candle that confirms the turn, than in the middle of a range.
