Pivot Points
Technical AnalysisMechanically calculated support/resistance levels derived from the prior session's high, low, and close, recalculated each new session.
Pivot points are a set of horizontal levels — a central pivot plus several support and resistance levels above and below it — calculated from the previous period's high, low, and close. They're recalculated at the start of each new session (commonly daily) and widely used as intraday reference levels for potential reversals or breakouts.
Because the calculation is purely mechanical and identical across platforms, pivot levels are watched by a large share of the market simultaneously, which can make them act as genuine support/resistance simply through shared attention.
