Core Inflation

Fundamentals

Consumer price growth excluding volatile food and energy — the underlying trend central banks weigh when setting interest rates.

Core inflation is a measure of consumer price growth that strips out the most volatile components — usually food and energy — to reveal the underlying trend. Because fuel and grocery prices can swing on weather, supply disruptions, or oil-market moves, headline inflation can jump or fall for reasons that say little about domestic price pressure. Central banks therefore lean on core measures when judging whether inflation is on track. Currency traders watch core readings closely around CPI releases: a headline surprise driven purely by energy is often faded, while a core surprise shifts interest-rate expectations more durably. Statistical agencies publish both figures together, typically monthly and year-over-year.
