Forward Guidance
FundamentalsForward guidance is how a central bank signals the likely future path of interest rates, shaping expectations and moving currencies.
Forward guidance is the communication tool central banks use to signal the likely future path of interest rates and policy, instead of only announcing what they are doing today. Through projections, meeting statements or explicit conditions — such as saying rates will stay low until inflation returns to target — policymakers try to shape market expectations and reduce uncertainty.
For currency traders, forward guidance often matters more than the rate decision itself. A central bank can leave rates unchanged and still move its currency sharply if the accompanying language turns hawkish or dovish. Guidance can be qualitative, calendar-based, or tied to data thresholds, and a shift in tone is usually priced into the exchange rate within seconds of the statement.
