Time in Force

Trade Mechanics

The instruction that sets how long an order stays active — day, good-till-cancelled, good-till-date, or immediate execution types.

Time in force is the instruction attached to an order that tells the broker how long it should remain active before being cancelled. Common settings include day orders that expire at the end of the trading session, good-till-cancelled orders that stay live until filled or manually removed, good-till-date orders with a chosen expiry, and immediate instructions such as fill-or-kill or immediate-or-cancel that demand execution within seconds. Choosing a time in force is part of order management: it controls whether a pending order survives a rollover, a weekend gap, or a volatile news window. Platforms usually show the setting in the order ticket alongside volume, price and protective levels.
